About PAPP-A / Pregnancy Associated Plasma Protein A

Pregnancy associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) is a metalloproteinase which cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs). It is present in a homodimeric (dPAPP-A) form, and also in a heterotetrameric (htPAPP-A) form with proMBP (proform of eosinophil major basic protein). It is thought to be involved in local proliferative processes such as wound healing and bone remodeling. Low htPAPP-A level has been suggested as a biochemical marker for low birth weight, preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, preterm birth and stillbirth, preterm premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption, and as an indication of Down syndrome. More recent studies have found elevated dPAPP-A levels in unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction making it a promising marker for acute coronary syndromes.
