Troponins form a complex (Troponin C, I and T) of three regulatory proteins that are integral to muscle contraction in skeletal and cardiac muscle, but not smooth muscle. Troponin levels can be used as a test of several different heart disorders, including myocardial infarction. The measurement of serum cTnI and cTnT is superior in terms of sensitivity and specificity to cardiac muscle enzyme measurements in the identification of cardiac muscle damage. Raised cardiac troponin concentrations are now accepted as the standard biochemical marker for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction.
