History
The Minerva Foundation was established by senior medical scientists back in 1959. Because the foundation was not permitted to pursue commercial activities, a clinical laboratories company, Medix Ltd. was founded in 1964 to perform and sell tests developed as a byproduct of the Minerva Foundation’s research work.
Medix was one of the first companies in the world to produce monoclonal antibodies, starting only three years after Köhler and Milstein published their Nobel Prize winning work on the subject. To answer the ever-growing demand for developing and producing monoclonal antibodies, Medix Biochemica Ltd. was established in 1985 to specialize in the monoclonal antibody business. Medix concentrated on offering clinical laboratory activities and today United Medix Laboratories Ltd. is the biggest private reference laboratory in Finland.
