Cardiac biomarkers are a varied group of molecules whose increased concentrations relate to the presence and the risk of future cardiovascular events. Several cardiac markers are currently used in clinical practice to support diagnosis risk assesment, and treatment follow-up related to different CVD pathophysiological processes.

Troponin I

Troponins form a complex of three regulatory proteins (troponin I, T, and C) that are integral to muscle contraction in skeletal and cardiac muscles. Serum cardiac troponin tests can be used to help diagnose several different heart disorders, especially myocardial infarction.

D-dimer

FABP3

Fatty-acid-binding protein 3 (FABP3) is a member of the FABP family of carrier proteins for fatty acids and other lipophilic substances. Heart-type FABP (FABP3) can be used as a diagnostic marker in the early phase of acute myocardial infarction.

Galectin-3

Galectin-3 is a beta-galactosidase-binding lectin. The expression of galectin-3 is upregulated during inflammation. It is used in assessing the prognosis of patients diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Galectin-3 is also involved in pathological processes including cancer, fibrosis and chronic inflammation.
